Lawmakers study sales tax hike as alternative to Snyder's roads proposal

Detroit News -- Lansing— Michigan would swap its 19-cent gasoline tax for a penny increase in sales tax under plan reviewed by the House Transportation Committee today.

The plan provides an alternative to Gov. Rick Snyder's road proposal, introduced as a 17-bill package in the House last week. That House package would replace the gas tax at the pump with a 28.3-cent tax on the wholesale price of fuel, and increase car registration fees by 67 percent.

Oh, but Snyder will say, "Increasing an existing tax is not a new tax. So, technically, I'm not breaking my promise."

This sales tax is nothing more than a backdoor for the real reason Snyder wants it. His bridge. Thats where it will all go. He is trying to find a slick way to slide it through. One tough nerd, my ass. This is what a businessman will do. Are you watching Romney supporters?

Now we will have to wait and see if Gov.Snyder was just all talk about no new taxes. But then we all know he will cave in and do what Michigan Lawmakers want.

Governor. Didn't you pledge "No new taxes!" during your campaign?

.

No. My pledge was "No new Texans!" We need to stop the flow of illegal immigrants pouring in from Texas...

The shine will wear off snyder pretty quickly if this goes thru, how bout cutting the size of the bureaucracy. Money for roads will be but one of the many blooms cultivated from such cuts.

I doubt that any of the money will go to fix the roads.

Politicians have never met a tax they didn't like. At least this is being done at the state level where it should happen, not as a federal decree.

Snyder is a Republican: He gives corporations a $1.8 Billion tax break (from the pension funds of Teachers, Fireman and Policeman) then he raises taxes on the retired!

Tax the rich, they can afford it.

I think a 1 cent increase in the sales tax sounds more equitable than raising the gas tax and registration fees.

the governor would just tax drivers and not everyone,
which sounds much more fair to me..
