Hyundai rejoins the 40-mpg club by gaining 1mpg? Not very much of an mpg gain here! The mpg needs to go up much more than that to be competitive with other much higher mpg vehicles.... Drive vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

as lawsuit shows, Hunday, Kia and Ford have overblown (can we say hyperinflated) the numbers?
I get close to 40 mpg w/ a non hybrid that is driven not too often below the speed limit.

It is nice to see Hyundai succeed with a hybrid midsize sedan getting 40-mpg as opposed to the 40-mpg hybrid compacts and hybrid subcompacts that other auto manufacturers are offering with the one exception being the new midsize Ford Focus hybrid.
When one adds the very good reliability ratings of Hyundai over the last decade based on Consumer Report member surveys to a midsize Sonata hybrid sedan getting 40-mpg, you do have a winner if a midsize sedan meets one transportation needs.

Why did it take them this long to REALLY reach 40mpg? My 2003 Corolla got 38mpg on the highway. Thanks for posting

I read an article a while ago that indicated that North America has 4 cars with 50 mpg or more. And Europe has 54. The article attributed the difference to the lower gas prices in North America.

Up 1 MPG to hit 40? I don't think so. Marketing ploy.

Hate to break it to you, @toadNY but one reason why we need ethanol in our gasoline now is that the refiners are cutting corners with octane quality control. Ethanol is a cheap way to boost octane. Cut it out of gasoline, without improving refining standards, and you're lucky to get 85 octane.

The Sonata is a large sedan, like a Camry, @carloco75. The first car that size that can get 40mpg is the new Ford Fusion hybrid.

You didn't look hard enough, @AKmailman. My 2007 Prius gets better than 40 mpg, in the wintertime, with the heat on, and with my stomping on the accelerator.
That's real-world fuel economy.
